Under the clinical supervision of the Director of Nursing or Nursing Supervisor, the RN is responsible for delivering comprehensive patient care through the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN will provide care within the healthcare unit and, when necessary, in patient housing areas. This position requires sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a structured correctional environment while maintaining patient dignity, confidentiality, and safety. The RN will also support patient education, medication administration, care coordination, documentation, and collaboration with healthcare and correctional staff. Key Responsibilities • Conduct comprehensive physical, psychological, and psychosocial assessments of patients in the healthcare unit and housing areas as needed., • Obtain health histories and assess illnesses, injuries, and diseases using clinical knowledge and available resources., • Develop and implement nursing care in accordance with established standards, protocols, policies, and procedures., • Provide leadership and clinical guidance to LVNs, MAs, CNAs, RNs, and other nursing support personnel as it relates to patient care., • Monitor patients receiving medications and maintain accurate medical records and documentation., • Administer medications safely and efficiently in accordance with provider orders, facility procedures, and applicable standards, including required medication verification and mouth checks., • Apply knowledge of pharmacology, including medication interactions, adverse reactions, side effects, precautions, and contraindications., • Use therapeutic communication and effective interviewing techniques to obtain pertinent patient information and identify healthcare needs., • Evaluate laboratory results, diagnostic information, and nursing assessments to determine appropriate interventions and referrals., • Make timely referrals to physicians, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers when clinically indicated., • Contact healthcare providers regarding medication orders and other treatment needs to promote continuity of care., • Communicate relevant patient information effectively to nursing staff, physicians, physician assistants, healthcare supervisors, and designated correctional personnel., • Participate in required staff training, including mental health-related training consistent with applicable NCCHC and Title 15 standards., • Maintain accurate electronic medical records and other required clinical documentation., • Protect patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times., • Comply with all correctional facility policies, healthcare protocols, security requirements, and applicable professional standards., • Practice within the scope of the California Nurse Practice Act, nursing Code of Ethics, facility policies, and established standards of care., • Identify opportunities to improve patient care and workplace processes and communicate recommendations to nursing leadership., • Perform other related duties as assigned and within the scope of training and licensure. Qualifications Education • Graduate of an accredited nursing program., • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required., • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Experience • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical nursing experience., • Previous correctional nursing experience is preferred., • Experience working with diverse patient populations and in structured healthcare environments is a plus. Licensure & Certifications • Current, unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) license., • Current CPR certification., • Must maintain all required licenses and certifications throughout employment.
