Job Description Job Title: Building Maintenance Technician Job Description This role oversees advanced building maintenance activities, ensuring that all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The Building Maintenance Technician independently performs complex troubleshooting and repairs, coordinates with external contractors for specialized work, and maintains detailed documentation of all maintenance activities. This position requires a seasoned professional who brings extensive hands-on experience, strong problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills to support a safe, functional, and well-maintained facility. Responsibilities • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems to reduce downtime and extend equipment life., • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems independently, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues., • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and complete repairs in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining high-quality standards., • Inspect buildings, equipment, and premises regularly to identify safety hazards and perform necessary maintenance to eliminate or mitigate risks., • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and maintenance, ensuring work quality and adherence to safety and company standards., • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company policies, procedures, and safety standards, including proper use of tools and equipment., • Maintain an organized inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, and tools, and ensure they are available and in good working condition., • Document all maintenance and repair work accurately and maintain detailed logs for future reference and compliance purposes., • Apply basic HVAC, electrical, and plumbing knowledge to diagnose issues, recommend solutions, and prevent recurring problems., • Communicate clearly with building occupants and stakeholders regarding maintenance activities, timelines, and any potential impacts., • Demonstrate strong organizational skills by prioritizing tasks, managing multiple work orders, and completing assignments within required timeframes., • Work safely and effectively in various conditions, including lifting heavy objects and accessing different areas of the facility as needed. Essential Skills • At least 10 years of experience in building maintenance or a closely related field., • Proficiency in the use of hand tools and power tools for repair and maintenance tasks., • Basic understanding of HVAC systems, including preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting., • Basic understanding of electrical systems, including safe practices for repairs and maintenance., • Basic understanding of plumbing systems and the ability to perform basic plumbing repairs., • Ability to independently diagnose issues across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems and perform appropriate repairs., • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with building occupants, contractors, and internal stakeholders., • Good customer service skills, including a professional and respectful approach when addressing maintenance requests., • Physical dexterity and the ability to lift heavy objects as needed for maintenance work., • Ability to work in various conditions, including different indoor environments and physical spaces within the facility., • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft applications for logging work and managing documentation., • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work orders, and maintain accurate records. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working as a building engineer or in a similar advanced maintenance role., • Emotional intelligence and the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and building occupants., • Strong people skills, including the ability to listen, respond calmly, and resolve issues collaboratively., • Enhanced organizational abilities, such as maintaining well-structured maintenance logs, inventories, and schedules., • Basic proficiency with Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, and email tools, to support documentation and communication., • No formal certifications are required for this role; however, relevant maintenance, HVAC, electrical, or plumbing certifications are considered a plus. Work Environment The role follows a regular Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour unpaid lunch break each day. The position involves hands-on use of hand and power tools, as well as work on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems. You will work in varied physical conditions, which may include standing, bending, lifting heavy objects, and accessing different areas of the facility. A professional appearance and attire appropriate for a maintenance and facilities setting are expected, with consideration for safety and practicality while performing technical tasks. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
