Job Description Job Title: HR Business Partner / Payroll & Compensation Lead Position Summary We are seeking an experienced HR Business Partner / Payroll & Compensation Lead to support a broad range of HR functions with a strong emphasis on payroll, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and HR compliance. This individual will serve as a key HR resource and payroll approver, providing backup support for payroll processing while also managing compensation programs, benefits administration, employee leave matters, open enrollment, employee complaints, and HR documentation. The ideal candidate has hands-on payroll experience, broader HR business partner experience, and the ability to lead or manage people. This role is well-suited for someone who has previously managed employees and is ready to move into or expand within a strategic HR role. Key Responsibilities Payroll Support & Approval • Serve as one of the designated payroll approvers, ensuring payroll is accurate, timely, and compliant., • Provide backup support for payroll processing as needed., • Review payroll-related data, changes, adjustments, and approvals., • Support payroll tasks related to promotions, compensation changes, benefits deductions, leaves of absence, and employee status changes., • Partner with payroll, finance, and HR teams to resolve payroll discrepancies and employee questions., • Ensure payroll practices align with company policies and applicable employment laws. Compensation Management • Support and manage compensation processes, including pay adjustments, promotions, market reviews, and compensation planning., • Evaluate employee compensation to determine whether roles and pay ranges are aligned with market expectations., • Help establish and maintain compensation structures, pay practices, and review cycles., • Provide guidance to managers regarding compensation decisions, promotions, and internal equity., • Track compensation trends and recommend when market reviews or adjustments may be needed., • Ensure compensation practices are consistent, competitive, and aligned with company goals. Benefits Administration • Support benefits administration, including enrollment, employee education, and issue resolution., • Assist employees with benefits questions, eligibility, life events, and enrollment changes., • Lead or support annual open enrollment activities., • Partner with benefits vendors, brokers, and internal stakeholders as needed., • Manage benefits-related processes for employees going on leave or returning from leave., • Ensure benefits administration is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable regulations. HR Business Partner Support • Act as a trusted HR partner to leaders, managers, and employees., • Provide guidance on employee relations matters, performance concerns, promotions, compensation, benefits, and policy interpretation., • Support managers in handling employee issues fairly and consistently., • Assist with workforce planning, organizational changes, and employee development initiatives., • Help ensure HR practices support business objectives and employee engagement. Employee Relations & Complaints • Receive, document, and help resolve employee complaints and workplace concerns., • Conduct or support investigations as needed., • Partner with leadership to address employee relations issues appropriately and consistently., • Maintain confidentiality and ensure proper documentation of employee matters., • Escalate complex or high-risk matters to senior HR leadership or legal counsel as appropriate. Compliance, Legal & Documentation Support • Support HR compliance activities and ensure proper recordkeeping., • Assist with legal matters, including gathering documentation and pulling discovery materials for lawsuits or claims., • Maintain accurate employee files, HR records, payroll documentation, and benefits records., • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws., • Help review and improve HR policies, procedures, and practices. Leadership & Team Support • Provide leadership, coaching, or supervision to HR/payroll team members as needed., • Serve as a resource for team members on payroll, compensation, benefits, and employee relations matters., • Support cross-functional collaboration between HR, payroll, finance, legal, and operations., • Demonstrate confidence and ownership in managing compensation, payroll approval, and broader HR responsibilities. Qualifications • Prior experience as an HR Business Partner, HR Manager, Payroll Lead, Compensation Analyst, Benefits Specialist, or similar role., • Hands-on payroll experience required., • Experience approving payroll or serving as payroll backup strongly preferred., • Broader HR experience beyond payroll, including compensation, benefits, employee relations, and compliance., • Experience managing people or leading a team preferred., • Strong understanding of compensation practices, market reviews, promotions, and internal equity., • Experience with benefits administration, open enrollment, and employee leave processes., • Ability to handle employee complaints and sensitive matters with professionalism and confidentiality., • Experience supporting legal discovery, HR documentation, or employment-related claims preferred., • Strong knowledge of HR policies, payroll practices, benefits processes, and employment compliance., • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills., • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and confidently advise managers and employees. Preferred Skills • Experience with HRIS and payroll systems., • Knowledge of compensation benchmarking and market analysis., • Experience supporting leave of absence processes, benefits enrollment, and open enrollment., • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records., • Ability to balance tactical HR work with strategic HR business partner support., • Comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced HR environment.
