Job Title: SEN Tutor / Mentor Location: Home-Based Mentoring, Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood, Essex (CM15) Hours: 4 Hours Per Week, 2 Hours Per Day, 2 Days Per Week Start Date: 1 September 2026 Focus: Mentoring and Coaching (Not Academic Tuition) About the Role Study Mind is seeking an experienced SEN Tutor / Mentor to provide 1:1 face-to-face mentoring for a 14-year-old Year 10 student with an EHCP who has been unable to attend a setting since February 2024 and is currently housebound. This is an SEN Mentor placement, not a teaching placement. The focus is entirely on building trust, reducing social isolation and supporting emotional wellbeing and confidence through her interests. Formal learning is not the aim and should only be introduced if she initiates it herself. About the Student Our student is bright, articulate and has a strong sense of identity. Her grandparents describe her as forward-thinking, determined, strong-willed and with a unique and funny way about her. She is historically academically able, particularly in reading and spelling, and is described as a passionate learner when engaged in self-directed activity linked to her interests. She hopes to attend university and work with animals one day. She has a diagnosis of autism and experiences significant anxiety around unfamiliar people and environments. She has a strong need for autonomy and withdraws to her room when anxious. Previous relationships between professionals and the family have repeatedly broken down, so the quality of the match matters more here than usual. Critical Language Requirement The EHCP directs that the words "school", "education" and "work" must be avoided entirely, as they cause distress. She also holds a distressing belief that visiting tutors might take her away from home. This must be handled sensitively from the very first contact, or the placement will not get off the ground. The Role Will Include Delivering 4 hours of 1:1 home mentoring each week across two sessions. Building a trusting relationship at her pace, with no fixed expectations placed on her. Sharing activities linked to her interests alongside her, rather than directing what happens. Supporting emotional wellbeing and self-understanding through structured resources including the Autism, Identity and Me workbook, VIA character strengths, Zones of Regulation used as emotion coaching, and interoception activities. Supporting sensory regulation using age-appropriate materials. Contributing to and attending Annual Review and One Plan meetings. Supporting engagement beyond the home only as a long-term aspiration, on her timeline and by agreement. Ideal SEN Tutor / Mentor Experience We're looking for someone with experience supporting: Young people with autism and significant anxiety around unfamiliar adults. Learners who are housebound or extremely socially isolated. Low demand approaches, including PANDA, REACH (Naomi Fisher) and PACE (Dan Hughes). Home-based mentoring, coaching, youth work, alternative provision or therapeutic support. Young people with speech, language and communication needs. Life story, grief and loss work would be a strong advantage. Communication Approach The successful SEN Tutor / Mentor will: Use declarative language, announcing that something is available rather than asking or instructing. Accept indirect communication as entirely valid, including gestures, thumbs up or down, knocking on a door, or passing items through a gap in the door. Never ask her a question on the spot, or require her to speak or read aloud unless she volunteers. Never force eye contact or face-to-face contact. Understand that she may become mute when anxious, and that her grandmother may relay her words. Follow her lead on topics, which will typically centre on her own interests. Recognise that she is highly sensitive to being perceived as childish, and pitch activities accordingly. Important Requirements A male mentor is preferred by the family, as she gets on better with males. Continuity of a single SEN Mentor is essential. Any change must be managed gradually and openly, never by abrupt substitution. Her grandmother will be present throughout every session. She has a strong aversion to flies and will avoid rooms with open windows when overwhelmed. Her sleep pattern becomes nocturnal during menstruation, so some scheduling flexibility is needed on a recurring monthly basis. There is a cat in the home. Student Interests She collects and reads the Warrior Cats book series, and has a particular love of animals and her own cat. She also enjoys dinosaurs, history, science, cooking, reading and Minecraft, and has previously attended History Club and Minecraft Club. Mentoring Details Location: Home-based mentoring in Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood, Essex (CM15). Sessions take place in the kitchen or lounge. In time, and only by agreement, there may be an opportunity for local visits to a library or bookshop, or simply a walk. Hours: 4 hours per week, delivered as 2-hour sessions across 2 days. Availability: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are unavailable, as another provider is already in place on those days. A consistent day and time each week is to be held.
