Job Description Job Title: Field Technician / Materials Tester Job Description The Field Technician plays a key role in supporting commercial construction projects by performing field inspections, observations, and materials testing. Starting with pile driving operations, this role focuses on counting piles, collecting samples, and assisting the pile team while receiving comprehensive training on all required equipment and procedures. Over time, the technician moves into progressively more complex responsibilities, ensuring construction activities meet project specifications and quality standards. Responsibilities • Perform field inspections and observations on commercial construction projects, beginning with pile counting and sample collection for pile driving operations., • Transport equipment, specimens, and documents to field personnel, project sites, and offices, and provide physical assistance with equipment set-up., • Prepare and submit clear, written field reports summarizing daily activities, observations, and test results., • Observe proof rolls and undercut operations and perform footing inspections using a dynamic cone penetrometer., • Inspect rebar and other structural components to verify compliance with project specifications and standards., • Monitor work procedures in the field to ensure adherence to project specifications and quality requirements., • Interact professionally with client representatives at project sites, including supervisors, foremen, project managers, and engineers., • Perform sampling and testing of construction materials such as soil, concrete, and asphalt as directed., • Conduct basic analysis or calculations to verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of testing data., • Provide assistance to other field personnel and support technicians or professional staff with routine tasks., • Clean and maintain equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure a safe and organized field environment., • Use basic computer skills to record data, complete reports, and communicate project information., • Take on progressively increased responsibilities and training assignments as experience and skills grow., • Work long hours in a fast-paced, outdoor environment, including day and night shifts, as required by project schedules. Essential Skills • Experience working outside in varying weather conditions., • General labor experience in a physically demanding environment., • Experience working in a fast-paced setting with changing priorities., • Ability to bend, kneel, and reach frequently during field work., • Basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and communication., • Willingness to work long hours, including extended shifts and overtime., • Ability to drive to and from job sites and transport equipment and materials., • Comfort using hand tools and field testing equipment., • Ability to accurately count piles and track quantities in the field., • Capability to perform soil testing, asphalt testing, and concrete-related tasks with training., • Strong attention to detail when observing construction activities and recording test results., • Effective communication skills for interacting with site supervisors, foremen, project managers, and engineers. Additional Skills & Qualifications • ACI certification or willingness to obtain certification, with support for training and exam costs., • Interest in construction, materials testing, and field technician work., • Ability to learn and use dynamic cone penetrometer and other specialized testing equipment., • Motivation to pursue additional certifications and training to increase responsibility and earning potential., • Adaptability to work on diverse project types, including hotels, warehouses, mixed-use developments, ports, and industrial facilities. Work Environment This role is predominantly field-based, with approximately 90% of time spent on job sites. Field technicians typically work 50–70 hours per week, with a typical schedule running Monday through Saturday. Initial assignments are on first shift, generally from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., supporting pile driving and related operations. After the initial pile project, the role transitions to night shift, starting around 8:00 p.m., with an expectation of working 12-hour days. Flexibility to work both first and night shifts is required, and employees are notified in advance of shift changes. The work is performed outdoors in active construction environments, requiring physical activity such as bending, kneeling, and reaching, and regular use of testing tools and equipment for soil, asphalt, and concrete. The environment is fast-paced, hands-on, and focused on safety, quality, and adherence to project specifications. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Savannah, GA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
