Job Description Job Title: Environmental Engineer IV Location: Ballston Lake, NY (Albany) Description/Job Summary POSITION DESCRIPTION HGL has a position open for an Environmental Engineer IV in the Ballston Lake, New York office. The Engineer IV will provide environmental engineering, remediation, and construction services to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, and other federal and state government clients throughout the eastern United States. This is an in-office position based out of HGL’s Ballston Lake, NY office, located 20 minutes north of Albany. As an Engineer IV, you will work with our high performing HGL Team and be responsible for supporting HGL’s portfolio of environmental remediation projects for various agencies across the United States and territories. Initial duties will include providing remedial investigation and design support as well as oversight of remedial action (RA) projects. Projects may include in situ thermal treatment, remediation, demolition, mine-waste cleanup, landfill cap construction, contaminated sediment removals, and groundwater treatment (both in-situ and pump-and-treat) and stabilization projects. Responsibilities/Duties WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING • Supervising junior and mid-level staff that include engineers, geologists and scientists., • Developing and providing technical review of engineering studies, plans, designs, and specifications for environmental investigation and remediation., • Interfacing with program and project managers, senior technical staff, the government customer, and RA Contractors., • Developing technical skills for long-term growth and development., • Managing characterization and remediation projects for Federal clients. Manage project financials, scope, schedule, and deliverables in anticipated transition to the Project Manager role., • Direct, manage, and lead project teams to meet project objectives in-line with corporate and client expectations., • Communicate effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, and leadership., • Overseeing and assisting with preparation of project deliverables including remediation work plans UFP-QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda and remedial design documents., • Developing alternatives evaluation and design supporting environmental remediation activities, including soil excavation, in situ treatment, air sparging, and waste management., • Preparing design calculations, data collection and analysis, conceptual site model development, specifications, and cost estimates., • Utilizing approved digital and AI-assisted tools, where appropriate, to support technical documentation, data analysis, project communications, and workflow efficiency., • Providing technical support during investigation, planning, design, implementation, and completion (as-built) project phases. Minimum Requirements WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the environmental engineering field., • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field related to Environmental Studies such as: Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering fields., • Strong writing skills with prior experience contributing to the preparation of technical reports, memoranda, and work plans., • Coordination of field subcontractors for environmental investigation and/or remediation activities. Knowledge and experience on a CERCLA, DoD, DOE, EPA, or RCRA project/site., • Engineer-in-Training Certification, • Possess OSHA HAZWOPER certification, • Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies and digital tools to improve project delivery and operational efficiency., • Ability to execute multiple projects and tasks concurrently, while adhering to cost and schedule Desired Qualifications WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT – Preferred, not required • Experience working on state and U.S. federal contracts., • Experience with remediation of various contaminants of concern including volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and PFAS investigation and remediation experience., • Experience with multiple remedial technologies - evaluation and design., • Experience using generative AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to improve technical writing, data analysis, research, visualization, or project delivery efficiency., • Preparation of engineering technical specifications., • M.S. degree in engineering with a focus in Environmental Studies or related field is a plus., • Professional License in field of study with an environmental focus or ability to obtain PE within 18-24 months of employment., • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) Physical & Environmental Requirements PHYSICAL & COGNITIVE REQUIRMENTS • Prolonged sitting up to 70% of the time, • Repetitive hand motions (typing, tool use, etc.), • Ability to see details at close range, • Ability to see details at a distance, • Viewing computer screen for extended periods, • Ability to interpret and analyze visual data (maps, graphs, warning indicators, etc.), • Driving a company or personal vehicle, • Analyzing and synthesizing data, • Complex problem solving and decision making, • Reading and interpreting technical documents or regulations, • Writing reports, proposals, or technical documentation, • Leading a team or coordinating multiple priorities, • Communicating effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders, • Managing competing deadlines and shifting priorities WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS • Must be able to travel up to 25% per year, • Office work environment This description is not a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee. Details Work Schedule: HGL office work is dictated by a 5-day work week; however, fieldwork schedules will deviate based on job requirements and may require longer hours and weekends. This position's final salary can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
