Mechanical Supervisor - Pipework & Mechanical Services Location Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Supervisor to oversee the delivery of mechanical pipework and associated mechanical services within Devonport Royal Dockyard. The role will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of mechanical works, including pipefitting, pipework installation, containment, freshwater systems, general service pipework and pipework removals. The successful candidate will provide clear direction to mechanical trades and subcontractors, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, to programme and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, RAMS and quality requirements. The role requires a strong practical mechanical background, excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage works within a live, controlled, and operational dockyard environment. Key Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate day-to-day mechanical installation activities. Manage mechanical craft personnel, including Senior Mechanical Craftsperson's, Mechanical Craftsperson's and apprentices. Plan and allocate daily work activities in accordance with the project programme and priorities. Oversee the installation, modification, maintenance and removal of mechanical pipework and containment. Supervise works involving carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete-lined pipework, and stainless steel. Oversee installation and modification of freshwater, domestic water, and general service pipework systems. Coordinate pipework diversions, alterations, extensions, tie-ins, and connections to existing systems. Supervise general pipework removals, including redundant and decommissioned services. Ensure appropriate isolation, draining, preparation and making-safe arrangements are in place prior to works commencing. Supervise installation of valves, flanges, fittings, strainers, drains, vents, supports and associated mechanical components. Coordinate installation of mechanical containment, pipe supports, brackets, pipe racks and associated support steelwork. Review drawings, specifications, isometrics, and site instructions to ensure the workforce understands the required installation. Undertake site surveys, measurements and setting-out activities where required. Identify clashes, access issues and other constructability concerns and raise these with the Project Manager/Engineer. Coordinate mechanical works with electrical, civil, structural, and other site activities. Liaise with the client, site management, engineering teams, and other contractors as required. Monitor progress against the programme and provide regular updates to the Project Manager. Identify potential delays, resource requirements and constraints and take appropriate action. Ensure sufficient labour, materials, tools, plant, and access arrangements are available to deliver the planned works. Supervise pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, and commissioning activities. Ensure inspection and testing requirements are completed and recorded. Ensure all works comply with approved RAMS, permits, drawings, specifications, ITPs, and quality requirements. Conduct regular site inspections to monitor workmanship and compliance. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all personnel understand and comply with site rules and procedures. Lead toolbox talks, pre-start briefings and task-specific discussions as required. Monitor housekeeping and ensure work areas are maintained in a safe and orderly condition. Support incident investigations and report safety, quality, or environmental issues promptly. Verify completed works and support the preparation of handover documentation. Provide technical and practical guidance to mechanical craft personnel and apprentices. Ensure plant, tools and equipment are suitable, inspected and used correctly.Skills & Experience Significant experience in mechanical pipework installation and supervision. Strong practical background in mechanical pipefitting and industrial pipework. Proven experience working with carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete-lined pipework, and stainless steel. Experience with freshwater, domestic water, and general service pipework systems. Experience supervising pipework installations, modifications, diversions, and removals. Strong understanding of pipework supports, containment, valves, fittings and associated mechanical services. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, isometrics, specifications, and installation details. Experience coordinating multiple trades within a complex operational environment. Good understanding of construction planning, sequencing, and programme delivery. Strong awareness of health, safety, quality, and environmental requirements. Previous experience within Defence, Dockyard, Marine, Industrial or Nuclear environments would be highly advantageous. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Ability to manage competing priorities and make practical decisions on site.Qualifications & Requirements Recognised mechanical engineering/pipefitting apprenticeship or equivalent trade experience. Relevant mechanical trade qualification. Proven experience in a mechanical supervisory role. Appropriate site safety qualifications. SMSTS or equivalent supervisory safety qualification preferred. Ability to obtain and maintain the required Devonport Dockyard security clearance/access. Relevant additional qualifications such as confined space, hot works, lifting/rigging, temporary works or MEWP would be advantageous.Key Competencies The successful candidate will demonstrate: Leadership - providing clear direction and support to the mechanical workforce.
