Scientist I – Bioprocessing x2 \n Darlington (National Biologics Manufacturing Centre) | On-site | £26,939 – £34,939 \n \n About the Role: \n We are seeking two Scientists (Bioprocessing) to join our National Biologics Manufacturing Centre in Darlington. \n \n This is a unique cross-team role designed to give early-career scientists end-to-end exposure across biologics process development, including Upstream (USP), Downstream (DSP), and Analytical functions. \n \n This is a great opportunity to work across teams — building a broad understanding of how biologics are developed, processed, and characterised. \n \n This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a well-rounded skillset across the full bioprocessing pipeline, working on a variety of modalities including monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, mRNA, and viral vectors. \n \n What You’ll Be Responsible For: \n \n Cross-Team Bioprocessing Support \n\n • Support projects across:\n, • Upstream processing (cell culture, fermentation)\n, • Downstream processing (purification, chromatography)\n, • Analytical testing and characterisation\n, • Rotate across teams or work on integrated projects spanning multiple areas\n\n \n Upstream & Downstream Activities \n\n • Assist with cell culture and/or fermentation processes\n, • Support purification processes including chromatography, filtration, and buffer exchange\n, • Contribute to scale-up and process development activities\n\n \n Analytical & Data \n\n • Support basic analytical testing to monitor product quality and process performance\n, • Compile and interpret data, contributing to reports and project deliverables\n, • Ensure accurate documentation and data integrity\n\n \n Collaboration & Project Delivery \n\n • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across the organisation\n, • Contribute to delivery of multiple concurrent projects\n, • Support external-facing programmes, including communicating results to stakeholders\n\n \n Laboratory & Operational Support \n\n • Maintain laboratory equipment and support general lab operations\n, • Perform routine checks, calibrations, and housekeeping activities\n\n \n About You \n \n You are an early-career scientist or recent graduate with a strong interest in biologics and a desire to build a broad technical foundation. \n \n You’ll bring: \n \n\n • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline\n, • Basic understanding of one or more of the following:\n, • Cell culture / upstream processing\n, • Protein purification / downstream processing\n, • Analytical techniques (e.g. ELISA, qPCR, chromatography)\n, • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn\n, • Good communication skills, with confidence presenting data\n\n \n Desirable (but not essential): \n \n\n • Hands-on experience in bioprocessing or biologics (USP, DSP, or analytical)\n, • Exposure to laboratory environments or academic research projects\n, • Interest in developing across multiple technical areas rather than specialising early\n\n \n This role is ideal for someone who: \n \n\n • Wants to gain end-to-end understanding of biologics development\n, • Is flexible and happy to work across teams\n, • Is motivated, curious, and keen to develop in a fast-paced environment\n\n \n Why Join? \n \n\n • Unique opportunity to build experience across USP, DSP, and Analytical in one role\n, • Exposure to cutting-edge biologics and advanced therapies\n, • Strong foundation for long-term career development in bioprocessing\n, • Collaborative, supportive team environment\n, • Competitive salary (£26.9k–£34.9k)\n\n \n Location & Working Pattern \n\n • Based on-site in Darlington (Nigel Perry Building)\n, • Fully lab-based role with hands-on experimental work\n\n \n The Opportunity \n \n This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the start of their career to gain breadth of experience that is difficult to access elsewhere, building a strong foundation across the full biologics value chain while working on impactful, real-world projects. \n \n Unfortunately we aren't taking any applications from candidates who will require sponsorship now or in the future for these roles.
