Job Description Make the Road States (MRstates) is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada, this in addition to New York, that serves to uplift the voices of working-class, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color across the Make the Roads umbrella. From an operational spectrum it serves as the Finance and Human Resources Compliance Officers for the umbrella at large. Make the Road New Jersey (MRNJ) builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and respect through community organizing, the provision of high quality legal and support services, transformative education and policy innovation. MRNJ is a project of Make the Road States. Founded in 2014, MRNJ operates centers and organizing hubs in Elizabeth, Passaic, Perth Amboy and Newark, NJ that reach thousands of immigrant and working class people of color each year. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above-- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. In the past four years, MRNJ has won more than 10 pro-immigrant and pro-worker policies, including the nation's first guaranteed severance law, landmark anti-wage theft legislation, occupational and drivers’ license for undocumented immigrants and a $15 minimum wage. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services including ESOL, legal services in the areas of immigration and workplace rights, workplace safety training and college access. This provision is included in a Union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining. Current Opening: The Case Manager will work with the legal and organizing teams to provide service support to members and clients. The Case Manager will additionally work with members and staff to provide education. This is an in-person, salaried position, primarily out of our branch in Perth Amboy, NJ; some travel to our other branches and nearby areas will be required. This position is included in a Union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining. Key Responsibilities but not limited to: • Work with MRNJ’s legal, organizing, and services teams to meet service needs; provide individualized assistance to community members and clients in accessing services through intake, needs assessment, application assistance, accompaniment, referrals, follow-up, and advocacy, helping individuals navigate systems and overcome barriers to accessing care and community resources;, • Coordinate frequent community clinics, workshops, and service events based on organizational priorities;, • Manage active caseload as determined by department and annual goals, and maintain client files in good order, including photocopying and scanning applications, letters, supporting documentation, and follow-up work. Ensure the completion of detailed and accurate client and case information in Legal Server or other case management system;, • Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and community-based service partners to improve member access to critical resources, including healthcare, mental health services, educational resources, public benefits, legal services, housing support, and social services;, • Develop, organize, and maintain updated referral resources, including provider and partner contacts, service eligibility criteria, and step-by-step referral processes, to streamline client access to internal and external services; ensure members receive timely referrals, follow-up, education, and direct access to care and support services;, • Lead and support rapid response efforts;, • Provide warm hand-off and follow-up to members and clients when needs fall outside program expertise, ensuring connection to appropriate external providers and support services;, • Create both external and internal facing educational materials regarding access to services and promotional materials for organized community events;, • Conduct outreach via street canvassing and phone banking to recruit for aforementioned workshops, clinics, and service events;, • Support the implementation and recruitment efforts to grow our membership base throughout the state;, • Provide support and participation for organization-wide and national campaigns, civic engagement initiatives, and other events;, • Participate in team and department meetings and assist with grant reports;, • Participate in ongoing continuing education and other trainings related to areas of case management and services support;, • Stay informed on local, state and national politics, organizational programs, campaigns, and operational developments to ensure accurate and consistent communication with members, partners, and the public. Job Description We are looking for a dynamic and compassionate Safe Passages Outreach Worker to join our team. The B.R.A.G. DOE Program is a school-based services component designed to provide culturally competent programming to at-risk youth to reduce the likelihood of their involvement in violence in their school or community & increase their engagement at school as measured through attendance, academic progress, & other measures. The Safe Passages Outreach Worker (SPOW) assists the Mediation Specialist (MS) in providing attendance outreach & individual & group counseling to students & assists in implementing other aspects of the B.R.A.G./DOE partnership school program to promote the education & leadership goals of the students. The program can also include school-wide activities to help change the culture around violence & to assist schools in their response to incidents that occur in the school or community. Target participants should reside in or near the target Community-Based Violence Intervention (CVI) catchment area, & be selected based on their risk for, & previously documented engagement in, violence or other infractions in the school or community in consultation with the principal & the local CVI provider. The Outreach Worker works with program staff, community residents, businesses and community-based organizations of all types to implement strategies to reduce and prevent shootings and killings in selected “hot spot” areas within the Bronx 47th Precinct, which comprises: Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville and Fishbay. The Outreach Worker assists the Program Director in coordinating regular mobilization and public education activities in addition to assisting the Program Director in supervising other program staff and conducting community outreach. Actively create and sustain partnerships between community and public safety oriented organizations in NYC neighborhoods to ensure access to existing geographical City Hall initiatives. The Department currently employs approximately 45 attorneys and advocates. Our legal team is integrated into all aspects of the organization’s work. The Housing & Benefits legal team consists of a supervising attorney, three staff attorneys and an intake and outreach paralegal. Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a bilingual (Spanish & English) full-time Supervising Attorney with expertise in housing law. The Supervising Attorney will oversee our Housing and Benefits practice to provide cutting-edge eviction defense and housing quality enforcement in aggressively gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The Housing and Benefits legal team collaborates closely with our organizing team to focus on anti-harassment and prevention of displacement around our neighborhood offices in Bushwick. The Supervising Attorney will provide policy and campaign support on the areas of housing and public benefits. The Supervising Attorney will also have a small docket of housing cases representing both individuals and groups of tenants in enforcing their rights and fighting tenant harassment. The Supervising Attorney will be based in our Brooklyn office. MRNY currently has a hybrid work schedule with 3 days per week in person (including court time) and 2 days remote. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, BUT NOT LIMITED TO: -Oversee the provision of housing-related legal services to low-income tenants and tenant associations in neighborhoods facing strong displacement pressure. • Provide exceptional supervision and support to a team of 5-7 housing attorneys and advocates., • Collaborate with MRNY organizers to build, support, and represent tenant associations., • Work closely with MRNY members and organizers to support MRNY members and organizing campaigns through strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, research, media work, and action support that strengthen MRNY’s tenant organizing., • Provide technical legal support for MRNY’s robust housing-related policy and organizing campaigns, including drafting legislation; training other staff and members on the legal aspects of campaigns; writing reports; lobbying visits in support of policy campaigns; drafting materials (for the press, funders, the membership, elected officials, and other advocates) on our key policy campaigns and victories; responding to media inquiries; and representing MRNY at meetings with elected officials and coalition partners., • Coordinate community outreach, including tenant association meetings, community education efforts, including through the creation of written materials, popular education workshops, and legal clinics., • Maintain a small docket of housing cases, including but not limited to complex holdovers, nonpayment proceedings, HP actions, Article 78 proceedings, and administrative hearings., • Participate in team, department meetings; collaborate with external partners; and assist with tracking and highlighting cases as necessary for development and grant reporting., • Continuous learning regarding movement lawyering (theory and application) as well as other critical concepts that underscore our organizational approach to building power, such as racialized capitalism., • Coordinate with the Legal Grants team and assist with grant reporting for the Housing and Benefits legal team., • Participate in the leadership of the Legal Department to advance organizational goals and to develop and maintain strong funding relationships to sustain our housing and benefits work. Current Opening: The Supervising Attorney will oversee Make the Road New Jersey’s immigration legal practice. Our team handles a wide range of immigration matters both affirmatively and defensively. The Supervising Attorney will supervise the team and provide legal support on immigration policy, organizing campaigns, and community education efforts. The Supervising Attorney will manage data compliance and grant reporting and also carry a docket of their own cases. Position: Driver/ Maintenance Worker Reports To: Director of Security and Operations Location: 196 Amboy Street, Brooklyn, NY 11212 What The Driver/ Maintenance Worker Does: • Identify and document all maintenance issues on work order form., • Immediately report maintenance equipment issues (i.e., inoperable, missing, etc.), • Comply with all maintenance regulatory requirements at all times., • Perform inspections of units to ensure safe conditions., • Utilize appropriate safety standards (i.e., wear safety goggles, masks, appropriate attire) and display safety signs when performing tasks., • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, window blinds, and draperies., • Clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, tubs, showers, shower fixtures, including walls, floors, curtains, stalls, and mirrors., • Replace light bulbs, light fixtures, light covers, electrical outlet covers and ballasts as needed., • Dust and/or wipe furniture, equipment, and ceiling fans., • Separate and transport trash, recyclables and waste to disposal area and consolidate for pickup., • Respond to and prepare for inclement weather (i.e., prepare sandbags, tie down loose outdoor items, remove snow and/or ice from the sidewalks, driveways and stairs, etc.)., • Clean storm drains and gutters to ensure proper drainage., • Polish metalwork, including lighting fixtures., • Replenish bathroom supplies including toilet tissue, paper towels, and hand soap., • Wash walls, ceiling, woodwork, windows, sills and door panels, heating and cooling vents and air conditioner filters., • Plaster and paint interiors of buildings., • Replace door handles or locks as needed., • Remove graffiti from interior and exterior surfaces., • Replace cracked or missing floor tiles, wall tiles and ceiling tiles as necessary., • Perform daily pre-trip vehicle inspection prior to first trip of the day., • Immediately report vehicle and/or equipment that are inoperable, missing or improperly utilized., • Complete vehicle travel log for all trips., • Assist passengers needing assistance in order to enter and/or exit vehicle., • Keep vehicle clean and/or free of litter at all times., • May make minor plumbing and electrical repairs., • May escort clients to appointments. Minimum Education/Experience Required: • Sufficient education and technical expertise: to comprehend written and oral instructions (work orders); to accomplish maintenance tasks; and to document accomplished tasks.
