Job Description Job Title: Automation and Robotics Engineer Job Description This role leads the design, implementation, and optimization of robotic manufacturing cells and automated production systems in a new, state-of-the-art distribution facility. You will be the first automation engineer on site, responsible for establishing the automation strategy, deploying industrial robots and control systems, and driving efficiency, quality, and throughput across operations. As the facility expands, this position offers the opportunity to grow into a broader leadership role within management. Responsibilities • Design and implement robotic manufacturing cells and automated production systems tailored to high-volume shipping and distribution operations., • Program, troubleshoot, and optimize industrial robots, including platforms such as FANUC, ABB, KUKA, and Yaskawa, to support a variety of applications., • Integrate robots with PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, conveyors, sorters, pickers, and other automation equipment to create robust, reliable production lines., • Support robotic applications including welding, material handling, assembly, palletizing, machine tending, and inspection, ensuring stable and repeatable performance., • Develop and maintain comprehensive robotic documentation, including backups, standards, and configuration records for all automated systems., • Identify and evaluate automation opportunities that improve throughput, quality, and labor efficiency across the facility., • Lead process improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce waste and optimize workflows., • Develop clear work instructions, process flows, and standard operating procedures to support safe, consistent, and efficient operations., • Support new product and process launches by designing scalable, repeatable manufacturing and material handling processes., • Conduct cycle time studies and capacity analyses to guide equipment selection, staffing levels, and automation investments., • Diagnose and resolve robotic and automation issues quickly to minimize downtime and maintain high equipment availability., • Partner closely with maintenance and production teams to improve uptime, equipment reliability, and overall system performance., • Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for recurring automation and equipment issues., • Lead automation projects from concept through design, installation, commissioning, and production launch., • Collaborate with vendors, integrators, and internal stakeholders to define requirements, review designs, and ensure successful project execution., • Develop project timelines, budgets, and technical specifications for automation initiatives and track progress against objectives., • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate system performance and safety before and after installation., • Ensure robotic systems comply with OSHA, ANSI/RIA, and internal safety standards, including guarding, interlocks, and emergency stop systems., • Participate in formal risk assessments and machine safeguarding reviews to identify hazards and implement appropriate mitigation measures., • Promote a strong culture of safety and continuous improvement by sharing best practices, training team members, and reinforcing safe behaviors. Essential Skills • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing and implementing robotic automated processes in an industrial or manufacturing environment., • Minimum of 3 years of experience programming and troubleshooting industrial robots and PLCs, preferably including platforms such as FANUC, ABB, KUKA, and Yaskawa., • Hands-on experience with robot programming platforms and teach pendants for setup, calibration, and optimization of robotic systems., • Proficiency in PLC programming and integration with robotics, HMIs, vision systems, and conveyor-based material handling equipment., • Strong expereince in automation and robotics, including system architecture, controls, and integration., • Ability to perform detailed diagnostics and root cause analysis on robotic and automation systems to resolve issues efficiently., • Experience developing work instructions, process flows, and standard operating procedures for automated processes., • Competence in conducting cycle time studies and capacity analysis to support data-driven decisions., • CAD proficiency, including experience with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, for layout design, tooling, and equipment configuration., • Working knowledge of OSHA and ANSI/RIA safety standards as they apply to robotic cells and automated equipment., • Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and coordinating cross-functional teams., • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with maintenance, production, vendors, and integrators. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a distribution or warehouse environment with conveyors, sorters, and picking systems., • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 technologies, such as connected equipment, data analytics, and smart manufacturing solutions., • Six Sigma or Lean certification, or formal training in continuous improvement methodologies., • Experience supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for automated systems., • Expereince in welding, material handling, assembly, palletizing, machine tending, or inspection applications using robotics., • Ability to thrive in a greenfield environment, building automation capabilities from the ground up., • Interest in growing into a leadership or management role as the facility and automation team expand. Work Environment This role is based in a new, 325,000-square-foot distribution facility featuring state-of-the-art equipment and advanced automation technologies. The environment is designed to be clean, organized, and optimized for high-efficiency shipping and material handling operations. The facility will utilize modern conveyor systems, sorters, pickers, industrial robots, PLC-controlled equipment, and a laser cutter for specialized cutting tasks. You will work closely with cross-functional teams on site and with external integrators and vendors as systems are installed and commissioned. As the first automation engineer in this location, you will help shape the facility’s automation standards, processes, and culture, with opportunities to influence future investments and organizational growth. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cincinnati, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $62.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
