Summary The Canine Behavior Specialist provides behavioral enrichment to the dogs in Animal Care Centers of New York City’s (ACC) care, including assisting with playgroups and behavioral assessments, providing exercise, behavioral and environmental enrichment, socialization, and basic training. Essential Job Functions: • Conducting individual socialization sessions with specific dogs and recording their observed behaviors., • Supporting the enrichment program by distributing enrichment items., • Aiding specialized behavior roles in their daily responsibilities, including behavioral assessments, playgroup, and training assistance. Other Responsibilities: • Work with the Behavior and Enrichment Supervisor to maintain and support programs that provide. behavioral and environmental enrichment, exercise, socialization, and care focusing on dogs housed at ACC., • Participate in playgroups daily: run dogs to the yard and learn safe management techniques for monitoring play sessions., • Implement enrichment plans for dogs at the care centers., • In conjunction with enrichment plans, teach basic manners during exercise and in the kennel as appropriate., • Work with the behavior staff, animal care staff, and volunteers to identify particular animals that are shy, have been with ACC for a long time and/or need special attention., • Assist with canine handling evaluations as needed., • Carefully monitor and communicate behavior and body language during assessments to ensure the safety of the Assessor., • Keep accurate written records to identify what was done each day for each animal and to monitor the plan., • Update records and observation logs as new information becomes available., • Clean up after animals. ACC has a robust foster program that serves this special population of vulnerable animals that include neonates, seniors, animals in need of physical or emotional rehabilitation and in some cases, hospice care. This allows them to heal, decompress and show their true personalities. Foster programs are critical to animal shelters because they save lives by expanding capacity beyond the shelter walls which reduce overcrowding, stress and illness. The Veterinarian, Foster & Population Health collaborates with the Director of Shelter Medicine, the Foster Triage Nurse and the Foster Team to identify animals that would benefit from a foster home and then ensure they receive timely, appropriate medical treatment and support. This will include management of behavior conditions in consult with our Behavior Team. Care and oversight will include having scheduled appointments in our 3 shelters with the option of in-home visits and telehealth consults in addition to minor and spay/neuter surgery. The Population Health Veterinarian may also be asked to assist in population rounds aimed at identifying animals that could benefit from other external interventions such as specialty surgeries or management of complex cases. Production assignments vary greatly in length, from one hour to several months at a time on location. Production days may be 10-12 hours. If there are questions, requests for further information regarding an assignment, the CASR is expected to contact the Hollywood program’s scheduling department to assist with any information i.e. species specific requirements for humane care and treatment, housing, safety precautions and filming specifics with which the CASR may not have adequate experience. Dangerous animal action, i.e. explosives, stunts, pyrotechnics or any type of animal action that has the potential for serious injury requires the CASR to contact the Hollywood program office for instruction and/or experienced advice. The general process is as follows: • The script will be read to determine the animal action that is being filmed., • Time permitting, the trainer and/or production will be called to determine how the scripted animal action will be achieved., • The pre-production information will be logged in the Hollywood program database., • The Hollywood program’s scheduling department will contact an CASR that is capable and available., • The available information will be given to the CASR assigned to the production., • The scheduling department/production will arrange for housing and transportation when necessary., • The CASR will be instructed with all the available, necessary information re: production contacts, geographical locations, potentially dangerous animal action, wrangler / trainer information, prior problems (good or bad) with the company/trainer/animal species/etc. as the information applies to their work with American Humane., • All the necessary paper work will be given to the CASR., • The CASR will be asked to sign confidentiality papers regarding the production, but these should be vetted through AH’s legal department., • The Hollywood program’s goal is to educate film personnel in humane matters, assist in any manner that pertains to the animal / animals that are performing in the film, and most of all to ensure the safety and welfare of the animal(s) involved., • All reports must be turned in on time and complete per the Report Writing policy. Job Description Associate Director, Facilities and Fleet Operations Schedule The working schedule for this position is Monday - Friday with varying and flexible hours. Weekends and holidays will be required as needed for on-call services/emergencies. Who We Are ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 20,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need. Summary The Associate Director of Facilities and Fleet Operations is responsible for the strategic oversight, maintenance, safety, and operational efficiency of all Animal Care Centers (ACC) facilities and fleet operations, ensuring that staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals are supported by safe, functional, and compliant environments across all locations. This role provides leadership to the Facilities and Fleet teams, overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of ACC's shelters and administrative sites, as well as the management of a fleet of more than 30 vehicles that support animal transport, field services, logistics, and program operations throughout New York City's five boroughs. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience required., • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, fleet operations, building operations, or a related field, including at least three-five (3-5) years of leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams., • Demonstrated success overseeing multiple facilities, fleet operations, maintenance programs, capital projects, and vendor relationships within a complex, multi-site organization., • Experience developing and managing operating and capital budgets, procurement processes, and service contracts., • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire and life safety systems, elevators, carpentry, and general building maintenance., • Working knowledge of fleet management principles, vehicle maintenance programs, transportation safety, fleet utilization, and regulatory compliance., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), fleet management software, and vehicle telematics platforms such as Samsara or comparable systems., • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to build productive relationships across all levels of the organization and with external agencies., • Ability to make sound operational decisions, respond effectively to emergencies, and lead through changing priorities., • Valid New York State driver's license with a satisfactory driving record required., • FDNY Certificates of Fitness (G-71) required or the ability to obtain within established timeframes following hire., • Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS), Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM), Certified Facility., • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Facilities & Capital Project Management • Direct the planning, coordination, and execution of facility maintenance, renovation, capital improvement, and infrastructure projects across all ACC locations., • Serve as the primary liaison with city agencies, including the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Buildings (DOB), FDNY, and other governmental partners regarding facility projects, inspections, and compliance requirements., • Develop long-term facility maintenance and capital improvement strategies that support organizational growth and operational excellence., • Manage contractor and vendor relationships, including procurement, competitive bidding, contract negotiations, project oversight, and performance evaluation., • Ensure all projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements., • Collaborate with department leadership to plan renovations, space utilization, office relocations, and operational improvements while minimizing disruption to shelter operations., • Oversee preventive maintenance programs to maximize facility reliability, extend equipment life, and reduce emergency repairs., • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of facilities-related policies, standard operating procedures, and operational best practices., • Manage departmental purchasing, inventory, equipment, and supply resources to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations. As a busy animal shelter in one of the biggest cities in the world it can get noisy inside. Animal Care Centers houses hundreds of animals in its facilities at any given time and with that comes fur, odors and other airborne particles in abundance. ACC offers many low-cost services to pets and people in need. This includes compassionate end-of-life services for people who cannot afford to go to a private veterinary office but still want to provide a professional and peaceful transition for their beloved pet.
